Last Summer we planted and had a shockingly successful garden. We had never done any gardening before, are notorious plant and fish killers (RIP little Tomatoe and Basil) and weren’t sure where to start. This summer we have our footing a little bit more and are making slightly bigger plans… and crossing all our finger and toes that we don’t get more snow!
Last Saturday I planted some seeds in egg cartons. I lacked faith that they would sprout and held onto all my extra seeds so that I could sow them into the ground in a few weeks time and hope that they would work, because surely my little inside sprouts wouldn’t. Well, I was wrong.
They have taken off! And have been a perfect project for my little garden fairy helper. She helps me water, and talks to the “tiny tiny sprouts!” so far she has been gentle and hasn’t destroyed any of them. She also has her own egg carton with just dirt so she can dig and transfer dirt from “tiny tiny containers!” to the next. This has been the perfect foray into toddler gardening!
Charlie has a garden box ready for her and she has asked to plant “strawbies!” and “matos!” so we will see how that goes. Gardening together has been a joy so far and I am so excited that she “gets it” here is the plan process in her words.
“first we dig it. Then it waters and grows bigger, bigger, bigger and BIGGER TILL WE EAT IT!” I am so excited to have a little one who knows where food comes from.

So fun! I have a ton of Strawberry shoots, mine have taken over

So wonderful! I often fantasize about having a wonderful garden, but I’m a.) a terrible gardener, and b.) completely overwhelmed by the awful state of my current yard. But I love the idea of growing berries!

Oh man, this is so sweet, Autumn! I love that she’s learning what food really is, none of this frozen, pre-packaged mysterious background stuff. I also love how she’s been gentle with the little plants so far! I used to have to be stripped down as a child for spaghetti so you can imagine how horrified my mom was when we were guests at a wedding (thus, I’m dressed in my finest) when I was about 5 and they served SOUP. But, surprise surprise, I didn’t spill a drop. Kids can be unexpected like that.
